ECOO General Assembly in Prague

ECOO General Assembly in Prague fosters fruitful discussions

On 21 and 22 October 2017, opticians and optometrists from all across Europe gathered in Prague for the General Assembly of the European Council of Optometry in Optics (ECOO).

The General Assembly fostered a constructive exchange of views among professionals and lively debates on topics of mutual interests. The ECOO meetings are an excellent opportunity to advance the development of the professions of optometry and optics in different countries. Given the differences in the scope of practice across Europe, the European Diploma in Optometry and the Qualifications in Optics, developed by ECOO, are important tools that members use in this regard.

ECOO is also active at EU-level and represents the interests of the professions in meetings with key decision makers at the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of Ministers. Key topics of concern include the classification of Fluorescein as a medical device for the fitting of contact lenses, the latest VAT legislative proposals and the Proportionality Test Directive, which will affect any new regulated professions and will also apply to any changes of current rules. The meeting in Prague has determined the future strategic direction of ECOO on these topics, which will have an impact on all members.

A workshop on good online practices was also organised, which will result in a guidance document for professionals and customers who increasingly operate and use online health services across Europe. The cross-border nature of such practices has an increasing impact on our professions and this common approach will contribute to positioning the professions as reliable and needed primary eye care providers.

The ECOO meetings are also important to inform Europe’s professionals of the other countries members’ optometry and optics landscape, and to update them on the initiatives and commitment of our association. Mutual support is very much promoted within ECOO and the wealth of information that ECOO brings together has been and continues to be a valuable resource for the delegations of the countries members.
